Honoring LTC Daniel Holland, DVM

A few weeks ago I was honored with the LTC Daniel Holland, DVM Memorial Scholarship.  This award went to someone that graduated from veterinary school in the last five years, engaged in veterinary medicine with a mixed animal emphasis, and was actively involved with public health, education and community. 

To be recognized for my achievements as a veterinarian and as an educator makes me a little emotional.  What makes this award even more emotional is the significance of the donor behind it. 

Let me tell you more about LTC Daniel E. Holland. 

Daniel was an army brat through and through. His father, in the artillery corps, retired and decided to become a farmer. Daniel attend Oklahoma State University (Go Pokes!), completed ROTC and became a veterinarian.  As a veterinarian in the military, they perform many duties. The main duty of course is caring for the military animals, but LTC Holland also worked with the Civil Affairs Group and was the Chief of Public Health in Iraq.  

LTC Holland did significant work in Iraq to help improve living conditions, he provided consultation to hospitals to ensure proper equipment, and aided Iraqis in sustainable health care for their animals.  

On May 18th, 2006 in Baghdad, a roadside bomb went off killing LTC Holland and multiple others.  A devastating day to his family, friends and country.  

I am truly humbled by LTC Holland and his courageous acts to serve our country.  There are no words to describe how grateful I am to receive such an honor. 

LTC Holland serves as a reminder that life is short.  What better way to continue to honor his legacy than by encouraging others to pursue the best profession in the world… veterinary medicine.
